January 2015: HAPPY NEW YEAR!
September 2014: Thank you to everyone who attended open house tonight! I wanted to share some thoughts with you as I reflect on the evening and the questions and concerns that arose. Taken from an email I sent to a parent: I believe that if taught correctly, the standards and instruction should foster students that are critical problem solvers that can engage in productive struggle where they might not always get a "right answer" but that they at least TRIED a solution pathway, and can find a fix their misconceptions along the way. Yes, math fluency (quickly and accurately) are the goal; but a deeper more meaningful understanding of math is also as critical. I believe that if this understanding and these communication skills are fostered now, at a young age, that students will experience more success as they are presented difficult problems in any area. The ability to persevere through a difficult task is a life skill that they all need. Hopefully by high school, students will learn time management skills and have the ability to pace themselves to meet the demands of their work.
